Trout Unlimited
Dump Site Cleanup
Little Red River assessment called "Project
31 Miles" was completed last year by Dr. Bill Layher of Layher BioLogics
RTEC. Some of the problems detected involved excess siltation from construction
sites and unpaved county roads, illegal dumping, bank erosion and
abandoned boat docks. The board has decided to hire Dr. Layher and crew
to begin coordinating the cleanup of all dumping sites. Board members Greg
Seaton, Chris Butts and Jeff Hawthorne recently toured the river by boat
and prioritized the cleanup sites. The site nearest Dripping Springs was
determined to be the worst one. We will begin with this site and work our
way down the list. The board decided to allocate $6,000.00 for this project.
This project is scheduled to begin the first week in March. We are now in
the process of coordinating this effort with Cleburne County and the Arkansas
Game and Fish. Any comments, contributions or offers of volunteer help can
be made to our chapters email address. Please address it to the President
of the chapter.
Update:
We have successfully completed cleanup of all the dumpsites. Check out
the absence of the old dump at the entrance of Dripping Springs Access,
the site along Highway 337 which is visible from the river above Libby Shoal
and the site behind Red River Acres subdivision. With the help of Bill
Layher and his crew this project has been completed under budget and with
good results.
